It is now my third week working at Fox&Co. Design and last week I attended my third Motion Design Meet Up. In the past, I attended these events to network as I thought it would help me find a job after university (and it did).

This time, I was attending as an employee and therefore my focus had shifted a bit. I used to try to talk to lots of different people about their work and my work. At this meet up, I was more focused on helping my peers do so. I invited 4 people to the meet up that I knew from my time at Creative Media Production at Massey. All of them were looking for jobs in the industry so I figured this event was the perfect opportunity for them. I think it was a success for them as I noticed they ended up chatting with other people in the industry.

I find it so important to network and help others that you know in this line of work because you never know what opportunities could present themselves in the future as a result. I have found that I owe most of my success so far to networking, which is why I try my best to encourage it with my friends.

The meet up started off the same way it always does, with chit chat, drinks and nibbles. This time around, it was different as instead of presenting work and breakdowns of work, Phyo did a presentation about the trends in the Motion Design industry. He also talked about how Covid has influenced the industry and the company itself. I found it all very insightful and I loved the videos he had collected for us as they were so satisfying and aesthetically pleasing to watch. Some of my favourites being:

and especially this TEDx Video: https://vimeo.com/499161123

I hope that when I have a full time job that I will still be able to attend these meet ups because it is important to give back; people helped me at these events, therefore I will help others when I am able to as well.
